What will it cost to use?

Look beyond the headline claim. Ask whether there is brokerage, a monthly fee, currency conversion, account fees, spread costs, withdrawal costs or minimum investment amounts.

A small fee can still matter if you are investing small amounts regularly. Compare the fee to the amount you plan to invest, not to an imaginary large portfolio.

How are investments held?

Check whether investments are CHESS-sponsored, held through a custodian or structured another way. Ask what happens if the platform closes, changes terms, pauses trading or restricts access.

This is not about assuming one model is always best. It is about knowing what the platform is doing with your holdings before you rely on it. If the ownership terms are unfamiliar, read the beginner investing terms guide before comparing apps.

What can you actually buy?

Some apps offer direct shares and ETFs. Others offer managed portfolios, fractional exposure, themed bundles, crypto, contracts or other products. Make sure you understand what you are buying and whether it matches your knowledge and risk tolerance.

If you cannot explain the product in plain language, pause before using the app to buy it.

  • Can you identify the underlying investment, not just the app label?
  • Can you find the fees, risks and withdrawal rules before signup?
  • Can you export records for tax time or your own tracking?
  • Can you contact support if access, identity checks or transfers fail?

What are the risk and scam checks?

Be cautious of pressure, guaranteed returns, social media hype, referral-driven recommendations and anyone asking you to move money quickly. Check whether the provider is legitimate and whether the product is regulated in the way you assume.

Security also matters: strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, withdrawal controls, support access and clean account records are part of the decision.
